Sweet Things Rag Quilt Tutorial 🍭

I am officially obsessed with the Sweet Things fabric by Andover. This collection is just as sweet as it sounds, and it is the star of the project we’ve been working on at my recent retreats. I had so much fun with it that I wanted to make sure those of you at home could follow along, too!

The Sweet Things Rag Quilt

This project is designed for pure sewing joy. We’re putting together a 50" x 60" rag quilt using a classic nine-patch style. It’s the perfect weight, incredibly cozy, and has that wonderful vintage frayed look that only a rag quilt can provide.

The Game Plan

To create this quilt, we are making 20 blocks total (set 4 across and 5 down). Here are a few secrets to making this project a success:

  • Stay Organized: Use clips to mark the "top" of each row. It’s a simple trick that keeps your pattern perfect as you move from the table to the machine.

  • The Rag Effect: Unlike most quilts, we sew these blocks with pretty sides facing out. Use a 1/2" seam allowance to ensure you have plenty of room to clip those edges later.

  • Prevent "Ballooning": I’ll show you how to stitch across the blocks to keep the layers flat. This ensures the flannel stays secure and doesn't pull apart over time.
