Flag Quilt Tutorials

Hello, my wonderful sewing family! Tami Jones here! I am just so excited to share two special projects I started during my retreat at Missouri Star Quilt Company. With America’s 250th birthday coming up, there is no better time to get some red, white, and blue on your sewing table! 🧵❤️

Option 1: The American Flag Rag Quilt 🛋️

I just love the cozy, frayed look of a rag quilt. For this version, I used a 10-inch tumbler template to cut my layer cake squares. It’s a very beginner friendly project because you don’t have to send it to a long-armer when you’re done!

  • The Layering: For each block, I used a cotton top, two layers of flannel in the middle (flannel is what makes it fray so pretty!), and a cotton backing.

  • The Assembly: I sewed my blocks into red and white rows. When joining the rows, I sewed them back-to-back, so the raw seams stay on the front.

  • The Snipping: This is the "worst" part for some, but I used the new Missouri Star rag snips, and they worked like a dream! The more you wash it, the prettier that fringe gets.

Option 2: The Traditional Grand Old Flag Quilt 🧵

If you prefer a traditional finish, this version is just stunning. I used the "Lighthouse" layer cake by Andover Fabrics, which has the most beautiful Americana prints.

  • The Tumbler Template: Using a 10-inch template on 10-inch squares means there is almost zero waste!

  • Problem Solving: Because I was "running my mouth" at the retreat, I ended up with some wonky seams. I used my favorite trick: lowering the needle, raising the presser foot, and adjusting at every single seam. It might take a little longer, but it lays perfectly flat in the end!

  • Backstitching: I say it in every video because my grandma said so! Always backstitch to make sure your flags fly proud for years to come. 👵
