Flag Quilt Block Tutorial!

Let's go make this beautiful flag block! This is a fantastic project that uses some simple 2.5-inch strips—perfect for using up jelly roll leftovers—to build the sweetest American flag. I'll walk you through creating the top section of our flag by piecing four blue strips together for the star field, and then joining our shorter alternating red and white strips. After that, we just assemble our longer red and white strips for the bottom section. (Fun fact I learned on my sewing journey: your flag should always start with a red stripe and end with a red stripe!)

Once our sections are pieced and beautifully pressed, it’s time to put our flag together! We will join the blue star block to our shorter red and white strips, making sure to match up those seams perfectly (remember to pinch it, pleat it, or pull it!). Finally, we attach that top section to our long bottom stripes using a simple quarter-inch seam. And of course, always backstitch when you start and stop, because grandma said so! This adorable block would be perfect for a throw pillow, table runner, or placemat, but I am super excited to turn it into an entire flag quilt.
