Dresden Plate Tutorial

It is officially July, which means it’s a great time to start thinking about our handmade Christmas gifts! Today, I am showing you one of my absolute favorite, scrap-busting projects: the Dresden Plate.

Using a Dresden ruler from Missouri Star and some 10-inch layer cake squares (or whatever scraps you have laying around!), we can make the most beautiful floral-like designs. While it looks super intricate and intimidating, I promise it is just a lot of relaxing, mindless sewing!

You simply cut out your pieces, fold the tops in, stitch them, turn them right-side out, and sew them together in a circle. My template takes 20 pieces to make a full plate. The best part? To finish that raw center, we just cut out a simple fabric circle and zigzag stitch it right on top!

Dresdens are incredibly versatile. I’m making this one into a lovely summer table centerpiece, but it would look gorgeous in Christmas fabrics, sewn onto a quilt block, or even appliquéd onto the back of a jean jacket!
