DIY Ruffle Shorts!
After we made our precious pinafore, I just knew we had to make some matching shorts to go with it. There is nothing cuter than a little one running around in handmade ruffles, and I am just so excited to show you how easy these are to whip up! 💖
In this video, I’m using a pattern that’s practically a hundred years old (so old I don’t even know the name! 😂), but don’t worry—most basic short patterns work the exact same way. Whether you grab one from Etsy or use a favorite from your stash, these steps will get you those perfect, sweet results!
Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Ruffle Shorts
-
[00:49] Step 1: Cut Your Mirror Images. You’ll need two pieces of fabric. Fold your fabric pretty-side out and cut your pattern so you get two "mirror" pieces (one for the left leg, one for the right!).
-
[01:08] Step 2: Sew the Legs. Fold each piece and sew the straight edge with a quarter-inch seam. This creates your two individual leg holes.
-
[01:36] Step 3: The "U" Shape Seam. Put your two legs pretty-sides together. You’re going to sew in a big "U" shape from the waist, down through the stride, and back up the other side.
-
[03:00] Step 4: Add the Lace! ✨ (Learn from my mistake—try to do this first! 😂). Lay your eyelet lace right along the edge of the leg, sew it down, then turn it under and top-stitch for a flat, professional finish.
-
[05:54] Step 5: Create the Elastic Casing. Fold the waist down about an inch and a quarter and sew all the way around, leaving a small hole to feed your elastic through.
-
[07:03] Step 6: The Safety Pin Trick! Use a safety pin to fish your elastic through the casing. It’s how my grandmother taught me, and it works every time! 👵
