Baby Blanket

The smell of a baby - Is there anything better? The weight of their little body on your chest as you rock them to sleep is the best. My favorite baby blankets are made from flannel. You can get flannel in all sorts of prints and solids. They make the cutest and most practical gifts for baby showers.

What you need are 2 yards of flannel fabric. You will use one yard for the front and one for the back. This will make your blanket around 43 inches x 35 inches when it is finished. You can use two yards of the same fabric or 1 yard of two contrasting fabrics. I prefer to use two contrasting fabrics. If you want your blanket larger or smaller just adjust the size of fabric.

*Lay your two pieces of fabric pretty sides together. Pin all the way around and trim off any overage.

*Stitch all the way around leaving a 3 inch opening. If it’s helpful you can draw two small lines at your opening before you begin sewing to remind you where to start and stop. Do not leave your opening in a corner. Leave it in one of the sides. The hole will not close up as nicely in the corner.

*Turn your blanket right side out and push out your corners so that they are crisp and square.

*Iron your blanket around pressing the edges down.

*Close your opening and then add a top stitch all the way around the blanket. The top stitch is not necessary but gives it a more finished look.

Sew for your babies, your sibling’s babies, and your neighbor’s babies. You will love the memories of the baby blanket that you made, and that they cherished. You will always look back with fond memories of the things that you created for those you love the most.

Until next time…
