American Flag Quilt Tutorial

Let's go make this stunning American Flag Quilt! If you made the flag block from our previous tutorial, we are going to take that block and add an 18-inch strip to the top and bottom of it. Once you make 12 of these beautiful flag blocks, we will start piecing them together. The trick is to alternate the direction of each flag as we join them in our rows—so one flag is horizontal and the next is vertical. By only sewing those strips to the top and bottom, it actually ends up creating a perfectly pieced border around all your interior blocks when you sew your rows together!

After we assemble our four rows of three blocks, we will add a gorgeous, wide 5-inch border around the outside of the entire quilt. I'll walk you through how to join your border strips end-to-end to make them long enough, laying them pretty side down onto your quilt top, and straight-stitching them on before trimming off the excess. (Just remember to always match those seams as best you can—pinch it, pleat it, or pull it!—and backstitch when you start and stop because grandma said so!)
