Tablecloth Waist Apron Tutorial

Today, we are taking a piece of a tablecloth—or a table runner like the one I found at HomeGoods—and turning it into a beautiful waist apron! 💖I love taking fabric that caught my eye and giving it a brand new life. This project is fast, easy, and makes the absolute best gift for the "little ladies" (or big ladies!) in your life.

Getting Started: The Dimensions

  • [00:08] I started with a piece of fabric 18 inches wide and 30 inches long. Since this was from a tablecloth, some sides were already hemmed, which is such a time-saver!

  • [01:25] Pay attention to the direction of your print! I made sure my hearts were facing up before deciding which end was the bottom.

The Ironing Situation and Hemming

  • [00:52] My favorite setup involves a heat-resistant pad, a wool mat, and my Oliso mini pro 3 iron. You can find all of these linked in my storefronts! 🛍️

  • [01:31] To hem the raw edges, fold the fabric over about half an inch, iron it, fold it again, and iron once more. This hides those raw edges perfectly.

  • [02:11] When you sew, try top stitching close to the edge. I like mine to look like it’s about to fall off, but you sew as close as you feel comfortable! And don’t forget to backstitch because my grandma said so! 👵

Crafting the Waist Straps

  • [02:46] For the straps, I used two pieces of fabric that are 7 inches wide and the full width of the fabric (WOF). Sew them together to make one long 88-inch strap.

  • [03:31] Find the center of your apron and the center of your strap, then clip them together so nothing moves while you sew.

  • [05:10] After turning your straps right side out, use a chopstick or a handy dandy tool to poke out the corners. Do not use your scissors—we don't want any crying over holes! 🛑✂️

The Professional Finish

  • [06:12] I promise you, top stitching makes all the difference. It takes a few extra minutes, but it helps the apron keep its shape when you wash it. 🧼✨
