Placemat

The placemat is traditionally used to protect the wood of our dining room tables, but, as an added bonus, we get to use them as decoration too.

I recently made some placemats that look like small quilts, and I am in love with them. However, my niece said, “Tam, you’ve taken it too far.” Maybe she’s right, but they make me smile.  I’m keeping them anyway. We can always count on the next generation to drown us in honesty, but I can assure you she won’t turn down a meal served on those placemats. She recently moved into her own apartment, and it was such a joy to watch her decorate with mismatched furniture and a lot of creativity. One of the things that made the biggest impact with the fewest dollars were her placemats.

I love teaching easy, beginner, and confidence building sewing projects. We are all beginners at the beginning and the only way to get better is practice, but, who wants to practice on difficult stuff? No one, that is who.

Let’s get started on another easy sewing project that makes a big impact.

These can be made with Fat Quarters. A fat quarter is ¼ yard of fabric pre-cut and ready to use. You can pick this up at any fabric store. They measure about 22 inches x 22 inches. You will need 2 fat quarters for each placemat, or you can use your fabric scraps. You can line these with interfacing to stiffen them up a bit or put some batting between the layers to give them a little fluff. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
