DIY Backpack Tutorial

I have heard you all loud and clear and today is finally the day! We are making a project that is just as practical as it is precious—the DIY Backpack. I am so excited about this one because I spent a lot of time "muddling" through different ways to build it until I found the absolute easiest way possible for you.

The best part? This bag is "no-fuss." That means no buttons, no zippers, and no snaps—just straight stitches and a lot of heart! It is roomy enough for all your retreat supplies and completely washable, too. 🧼

This project is perfect for using up those larger cuts of fabric you’ve been saving. Here is how we get it done:

  • The Foundation: You’ll need two pieces of fabric (one for the main body and one for the lining), each measuring 17" x 50". Make sure to round off one end for that classic flap shape!
  • The Magic Turning Hole: When sewing your lining, leave about a 3-inch gap. This is how we’ll turn the whole bag right-side out later—it's practically genius!
  • The Loop Details: I used some darling printed bias tape for the loops that hold the straps in place. I love the ones from Bessie Pearl—they add such a sweet, vintage touch.
  • Box Those Corners: To give the bag some depth, we cut 2-inch squares out of the corners. This "boxes" the bottom so the bag can stand up and hold all your treasures.
  • Flap Loop Placement: We measure 11 inches down and 5 inches in to add our 5-inch loops. Just lay them side-by-side rather than on top of each other so you don't break a needle! 🪡🛑
  • The Ironing Situation: Before that final top-stitch, get everything nice and flat. Use a chopstick to poke those corners out—do not use your scissors or we’ll all be crying over holes! 😭✂️

For my straps, I decided to use some precious cotton webbing, but you can always make your own fabric straps if you prefer! I even added some iron-on chenille letters to the front of mine to personalize it. Just a little tip: make sure to stitch those letters down, because the iron-on glue doesn't always want to stay forever through the wash.

I am just so happy with how this turned out. It is "easy peasy," functional, and looks absolutely darling. I can't wait to see what fabrics you choose for yours!

Happy sewing, everyone! I love you all! !! 🥰🧵🎒
